After the ‘100 Smart Cities’ scheme, Prime Minister in 2015 launched an ambitious scheme for rural India to develop around 2,500 ‘Smart Villages’ by 2019 under the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY). The scheme will be implemented through village development plan, prepared for every identified gram panchayat with special focus on enabling every poor household to come out of poverty. SAGY is expected to change the rural landscape of India.

The smart villages plan will incorporate solar pumps for irrigation, solar water heaters, solar panels, connected with batteries for home and street lighting, etc. Nano-grids will be used for digitally connected homes. In addition, setup of eco-friendly biogas plant could make a village self-reliant for its fuel needs. Solar street lighting is also fast becoming a reality. The efforts for rural development will be progressively modified with time keeping it in tune with changes happening around the world.
